Have you seen the movie ‘Click’?

It stars Adam Sandler as a workaholic architect who ignores his family in favor of his career. One day he comes across a truly universal remote… one that allows him to perform TiVo-like functions on his own life. He can pause events or fast-forward over them. He’s in control, seemingly. The remote has a menu which appears holographicaly around the protagonist, a cool visual effect. The menu is for the DVD that's Michael’s life…the one he's in the process of creating.

That is until the magic remote begins choosing what to fast-forward  without Michael’s knowledge or approval!  So much for thinking you are in control!

The character sees then how much of his personal life has passed him by because he is so focused on his career and he realizes the importance of being present and spending quality time with his family.

This could be all too predictable and precious, but instead I found it to be a solid metaphor about life in ambitious 21st century America.  Know what I mean?  Right.

The point "Click" is making is simple but strong: many of just go through the motions. Sure we’re pursuing our goals in the time-honored tradition, but we’re so fixated on a fine future that we're barely present. There’s ambition and then there’s driven emptiness. It’s important not to lose focus on what’s really important in your life.

Interesting…when Michael presses that remote, he doesn't change reality. He only changes his perception of it. So when he fast-forwards, things aren't really going faster, but rather his consciousness is slipping out and then returning moments later. Don’t we all do that sometimes? Gone today, gone tomorrow?

At the dining room table, everyone in Michael’s family is eating and talking, but Michael’s miles away because his remote is moving him forward. He’s on auto pilot. This is a jumping-off point for a poignant story about the consequences of a robotic way of being.  Does that ever work with your clients and employees? Right.

You’d like to think you can control life and better yourself, improve your surroundings and slide through the messy parts of life. You can’t. Why would you?  There is no universal remote to avoid the bumps in the road.  That’s your good news – you get to experience all of what world has to offer.

So beware that in wanting to make your life work, you don’t make life just WORK.

How this relates to business, sales and client relationships:

  • Self-reflection and personal growth is important in your success in sales. When you are open to feedback and new ideas, it allows you to create abundance in all parts of your life.  When you’re flexible and have a forgiving nature, your clients get that about you and become more trusting of you themselves. Freeing yourself up attracts people to you.
  • Do you believe the statement: “all things being equal people, buy from those they like”? Then being present and connected in that moment to your client, and/or your employee is hugely important …if you really want to be liked.
  • Being in loving relationships gives you the opportunity to be more successful in your career. On a silver platter. That’s because when you’re connected to everything life has to offer, you take your focus off work and put it onto your favorite people.  By re-focusing on your ‘peeps’, you get clear about work issues that were plaguing you before! You've allowed yourself to enjoy other energizing aspects of life. That triggers creativity and confidence.
  • Having a strong partner allows you to collaborate with someone at your level who has your best interest at heart and who provides you with ideas and encouragement. When you’re up against a sales quota, enjoy your partner and just watch how you succeed!
  • Don’t take loved ones or best clients for granted. Take care of them to the best of your ability instead. Consciously support them as well as your strategic partners, employees and valued vendors.
  • When you take the focus off yourself and don’t take yourself too seriously, you allow the universe to serve you with all that the world has to offer because you are not attached to any one way that your goals are going to get accomplished – served in a silver platter, again!
  • Instead of thinking there is something better out there in terms of sales growth or the next great idea, look to your current clients, strategic partners, employees, friends and family - right there in front of your nose. And put down the remote!
